I’m still kinda salty about Simm!Master being more of an asshole than he used to be but that’s just me
In his first appearance he killed a 10th of the planets population, kept martha’s family enslaved, referred to jack and martha as “the girly and the freak” (and said he didn’t know which was which) and beat his wife……..
fandom had years to pick out the brief hints of non-asshole and reconstruct Simm!Master as someone to be redeemed through the redemptive power of Love. (to be fair, this is essentially Missy’s arc, neither came out of nowhere). after a while, the original canon held far less power than Fanon Master, and i can imagine that any long-term Simm!Master and/or Simm/10 fan would find it jolting to go back to the start, minus all the fan-consensus characterization
there’s also the thing of like, one character written by different people. Simm!Master, as written by RTD, is evil and an asshole but also funny, almost charming, a whirlwind of high camp. Simm!Master as written by Moffat tries to be funny but the jokes aren’t meant to land, he’s still camp but it’s an unsettling, sick sort of thing. again, makes sense: Missy is now the over-the-top problematic fave. Simm!Master has to be all the things Missy isn’t anymore, and it’s not OOC so much as it is the narrative no longer asking us if we want to laugh at his cruelty. he didn’t change, the story’s attitude towards him did.
leaving aside discussions over what the Master’s self-sacrifice in TEOT ~means~, WEAT and TDF pluck out the version of the Master that makes the best case for the argument being made - that Missy is better than she was, that she can change - and i gueeeeeessss i can see where fans are mad but, like. is whole point, how Koschei is not inherently as shitty as they were at their worst. and canonically, Simm!Master at his worst was hugely fucking awful. he was always an asshole, like Missy was for most of s8 and s9 (tho i do think his specific awfulness is harder to take than Missy’s more general kill-em-all vibe, but ymmv). just now the jokes aren’t funny and the charm feels cheap, and we’re given fewer chances to ignore what a shitbird he is

Yes! This is an excellent point! And it’s also worth noting that a big part of the Master’s character is charm/hypnosis/whatever. He’s adept at persuasion and misdirection, able to effortlessly worm his way into people’s hearts over and over again.
So when we see Simm!Master from the point-of-view of Martha, or Britain’s population, or especially Ten, we have to admit the guy has charm. “Well, he’s evil and horrible and completely insane, but okay, that was a little funny,” we as the audience shrug. And that’s why he’s so good at what he does: his ability to slip past defenses while people are too disarmed by amusement or indulgence to look twice.
But in “The Doctor Falls,” we see him directly contrasted with Missy. And Missy is the real deal in that she is, for once in her very long life, sincere in her loyalties and honest with the Doctor. So the people through whom we see Simm!Master are no longer blinded, because Missy has shown us the inner depths of the Master.
Thus Bill, having seen so clearly from the beginning just how dangerous Missy is, and having experienced a horrifying betrayal, sees straight through his jokes and is disgusted by them. Thus the Doctor, having seen how good the Master could’ve been—will be—, is no longer so dependent on the Master. And thus Missy is able to see straight through her younger self’s charm to the ugliness beneath.
These three are the main players, and part of the brilliance of this episode is that it shows us the Master stripped of disguise, both in the person of Missy (who has finally made the right choice) and the Master, who is now seen as wasted potential and nothing more. It’s an amazing comparison, with all the more depth and poignancy for Missy’s final and true redemption.
Sooooo I’ve done a cover of this before here. It’s based on this scene. And idk I just wanted to play it again because I miss Clara so much, and I did a slight variation to my original. asdfghjkl i just miss whouffaldi so much.
So again, and for those in the back who are also whining, no I am NOT going to change my icon. And, if I decide to, it will be Peter Capaldi regardless.
**just for the record, I’ve seen some 12th Doctor “fans” change their icons to 13 so fast, it was like a tornado going by! My favourite was one who changed the icon, and followed it with, ‘the 12th Doctor is so yesterday, and really pointless to keep him as my icon/photo. Thirteen is the BEST Doctor out of all of them!’

There’s a photo I’d love to add to this, which is of Capaldi in S8 clothes (red-lined coat, dark blue waistcoat), in front of the TARDIS, sticking his fingers in his ears and looking sassy. However, not only am I not finding that photo right now, I don’t know how to add it to this post. Imagine I’ve added it here…

I’ve also received requests to change my icon … but I won’t. Twelve is my favorite Doctor. He’s also STILL the current Doctor.

In any case, the Doctor is always a distillation of all the previous Doctors, so any iteration makes perfect sense as an icon.
Being as I’ve gotten numerous replies on this post, and I’d love to answer every single one, but as I’m not sure how to do so, I shall thank everyone here!
Ah, and my icon for the next 24 hours. If anyone has suggestions for the next one, the Ask box is open!
Just to add I have Peter as Doctor Who as my icon and my header image and I ain’t changing them for anybody. He is and will always be Dr Who to me. Why should we change our icons just because an actor moves on from a show. Everybody has their favourite actor or character and are free to choose which ever they want as their icon.
Screw the idiots and here’s why: 1) Peter is the current Doctor until the christmas episode, 2) he’ll always be the Doctor after that, 3) he’s my favourite Doctor, 4) people can have the icon they like and 5) it’s definitely not other peoples business. Those idiots made me angry, so now I changed my icon to Peter Capaldi, too. We can do whatever the hell we want with our blogs.
